Illumination Art Reception October 2015

Raynes Roberts illuminated the imagination and personalities of Canadian authors in three venue exhibitions at the Gardiner Museum Shop, the International Festival of Authors at Harbourfront Centre, and the Toronto Public Library.

 

LLUMINATION: Portraits of Canadian Authors, a projected art installation of 150 photographic portraits, showcased at both the Harbourfront Centre and the Toronto Reference Library as a complement to the exhibition in the Gardiner Shop. The portraits depict Margaret Atwood, Conrad Black, Joseph Boyden, Emma Donoghue, Charlotte Gray, Elizabeth Hay, Sheila Heti, Plum Johnson, Margaret MacMillan, MG Vassanji, Anne Michaels, Rohinton Mistry, Michael Ondaatje, Andrew Pyper, Miriam Toews, Kathleen Winter, and Jane Urquhart, among others.

 

This multi-media project was two years in the making. Raynes Roberts traveled over 20,000 km and took over 22,500 photographs, in addition to working on his one-of-a-kind crystal pieces, which use a rare combination of delicate stippling—a time-consuming technique from the 17th century—and deep intaglio diamond wheel-engraving.
